10 Summer Energy Saving Tips

May 31, 2019

Summer is not only a time for hot temperatures but also soaring electric bills. With a few preventative measures, you can stop spending and start saving. Check out our 10 summer energy saving tips!

  1. Open the Windows . Opening up your windows at night or when there’s a nice breeze is a great way to naturally ventilate your home, without running up your energy bills.
  2. Shut Out the Sun. While the last thing you may want to do is sit in a dark house on a sunny, summer day. Closing your shades or blinds when the temps are soaring, can help you prevent unwanted heat gain.
  3. Turn on Your Ceiling Fans. Running your ceiling fans in the summer helps to better circulate cooled air throughout your home. In fact, according to the Department of Energy, the use of ceiling fans allow you to set your thermostat four degrees warmer without any reduction in comfort.
  4. Seal and Insulate. Two of the most economical ways to maximize energy efficiency and comfort is to seal air leaks and insulate. According to the EPA, tackling both of these DIY home improvement projects, can save you up to 10% on your annual utility bills.
  5. Keep the Vents Clear. Make sure your vents are open, clear of dust and that there’s no furniture or curtains blocking airflow. An obstructed vent can not only put a strain on your HVAC system, but can also cause a rise in your energy costs.
  6. Change Your Furnace Filter & Schedule an Air Conditioner Tune-Up.   Scheduling an annual air conditioning tune-up and inspection is not only necessary for safe system operation, but it also restores proper efficiency levels. During a tune-up, a trained HVAC technician will thoroughly clean your system, change your furnace filter, tighten any loose fittings, and inspect it for wearing parts.
  7. Get Smart with Your Thermostat Settings – If your first instinct is to crank up the AC on a hot summer day, resisting the temptation will make you appreciate the savings. Always remember that the smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling costs will be. If you have a smart or programmable thermostat, utilizing smart scheduling is one of the easiest ways to save.
  8. Cook Outside. There’s nothing that tastes better than a perfectly grilled meal on a hot summer day. And who knew that cooking outdoors could save you money?  Appliances such as your oven, stove, dryer and dishwasher give off heat when in use. This build-up of heat along with hot outdoor temps can really push your air conditioner to the limit, forcing it to operate more often and for longer periods of time.
  9. Use LED Lighting. Incandescent and fluorescent light sources that are warm (or hot) to the touch, are a very common source of unwanted summertime heat. Now you can buy affordable LED lighting that not only draws less electricity but stays cool to the touch for maximum energy savings.
  10. Adjust Your Water Heater Settings. Did you know that 18% of your household energy consumption comes from water heating? Create savings by turning down the temperature of your water heater to 120°F for greatest benefit.
