Fight the Flu in Your Home

Nov 05, 2020

Isn’t autumn lovely? The welcome chill in the air, the stunning fall foliage, and the adorably festive pumpkins are enough to bring joy to anyone. Albeit beautiful, this otherwise delightful season, has one dreaded drawback: the flu virus. Unfortunately, this nasty virus finds its home in the comfort of the ever-chilling air and makes its rounds until it warms again. I know! As if we didn’t have enough to worry about. Now, due to the current state of the world we are all experts in self and surface sanitation, but there are also measures you can take inside your home to help keep the flu virus at bay. We, here at Steele Heating and Cooling, have put together this easy-to-follow list you can take to aid in your home’s fight against the flu.
Before I jump into the larger aspects of flu-proofing your home there is a smaller side that is just as important: sanitization.

1| Sanitize, Sanitize, Sanitize
  • Now, I realize I previously proclaimed you a sanitization expert but the importance of this task merits a spot on our list. A simple swipe with an anti-bacterial cloth will do the trick on these “hotbed” sanitization spots around your home.
– Doorknobs – Light switches – Remote controls – Sink levers – Stairway railings – Fridge handles – Cell phones – Doormats/shoes
We all might know of these “high traffic germ hot-spots” but that doesn’t mean they cannot be easily forgotten. Think about the frequently used surfaces in your own home and add them to your daily anti-bacterial check list. Now, onto ways you can improve the quality and cleanliness of the air you breath inside your home.

2| Check Your HVAC System’s Air Filter
  • The cleanliness of your air filter corresponds directly with the quality of the air in your home. In fact, this is its primary job. It cleans the circulated air. This is important especially during the colder months, as people spend as much as 90% of their time indoors. Not to mention, a clogged air filter is the number one cause of HVAC system failure.
  • Call a specialist today for assistance, the air filter in your system is the first line of defense against outside invaders in the air. And trust us, preemptively changing your filters is a much easier pill (bill) to swallow than dealing with a whole system failure.

3| Stay on Top of Your Home’s Humidity Levels
  • We all are aware that the cold weather and the heating system we use to combat it dries out our air. But did you know dry air is a friend to the flu? Dry air wears down your body’s natural barriers against inflammation in your respiratory tract. This means you are more susceptible to infections, colds and even the flu.
  • A single room humidifier might do the trick or you can weigh the benefits of a whole-home humidifier. This will work together with your HVAC system to ensure your whole home is in the healthy humidity range. Talk with your HVAC specialist to test your home’s humidity and discuss which option is best for your home..

4| Go the Extra Mile and Purify the Air You Breath in Your Home
  • Air purifiers can remove the smallest microbes in the air, reducing harmful airborne germs that include cold and flu viruses. Again, a single room purifier might be all you want, but consider a whole-home option to effectively purify every room in your home. Doctors recommend air purifiers with the HEPA filter, talk with your HVAC specialist about what system is best for your home.
The world today has everyone’s guard up over the slightest cough or sneeze. Follow this list and breathe easier (literally) knowing you are doing all you can to keep the air in your home as clean as possible for your family. Call us today to schedule an appointment or just talk with one of our specialists about your concerns surrounding your home’s indoor air quality. We, at Steele Heating and Cooling, would be more than happy to assist you in your fight against flu season.
